Contains six letters regarding the collection and transfer of Mary McCornack Thompson's diaries after her death in 1936. The first five letters are by Mr. William L. Thompson (Mary's husband) to his nieces Margaret and Jay Urice, who are locating and collecting Mary's diaries. The letters are all handwritten, with some typed copies. The sixth letter is from Jay Urice to Mr. Julian Fowler, a librarian at Oberlin College, about having Mary's diaries sent to Oberlin. Arranged chronologically.

Contains 90 diaries maintained by Mary McCornack Thompson during her time as a Presbyterian missionary in Africa, documenting in great detail her daily life and work. The diaries provide a revealing look at daily missionary life in Africa (attending meetings, prayers, teaching classes), thoughts on scripture, weather, friends and other missionaries, daily chores (sewing, baking, gardening), brief glimpses of the culture and customs of the local Africans, as well as descriptions of her travels throughout the world, and encounters with friends and fellow missionaries. She also notes her thoughts about world events such as the Russian Revolution and World War I. Throughout the diaries she describes her travels across Africa, the Middle East, the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Far East. The entries are very matter-of-fact, describing situations, people, and events, but containing little introspection about how she feels. The journals are arranged by chronological volume numbers given by the author. Many small groups of loose materials were found laid into the beginning or end of the journals; these materials have been left in the journals; some of these items appear to be unrelated to the journals in which they were found.

Throughout the Soviet occupation and the Taliban era, various Afghan political and social welfare groups based their operations in Peshawar, Pakistan. From Zahir Shah-loyalists to women’s aid organizations, a number of them published magazines and newspapers for Afghan refugees, as well as their countrymen at home.

After the events of September 11, 2001, American-led coalition forces invaded Afghanistan and deposed the Taliban, making way for the presidency of Hamid Karzai. In the decade since his initial appointment, the government has progressively restored civil rights that were restricted under the Taliban, including freedom of the press. In addition to pro-government newspapers and magazines, a variety of critical voices can be found among the emerging print media outlets of the Karzai era.

Islamists in Afghanistan began to resist PDPA social reforms long before the Soviet invasion. But when Moscow sent troops to Kabul to prop up the failing communist government in 1979, their resistance swiftly escalated into full-scale insurgency. Well-funded, often foreign-backed jihadists hounded Soviet forces throughout the country, leading Mikhail Gorbachev to order their withdrawal in 1989. Various Mujaheddin factions continued the struggle against Mohammad Najibullah's tottering regime until it fell in 1992, when they turned their weapons against one another. Throughout the conflict, many of the parties (including Jamiat-i Islami, Hezb-e Islami, and others) published newspapers and magazines to record their accomplishments and seek greater legitimacy. Foreign governments, including Iran, contributed pro-Mujaheddin literature, as did pan-Arab Islamist organizations, which published their own magazines to encourage jihad and solicit donations at home and abroad.

Includes a few medical statements and receipts, along with two volumes of household accounts maintained by Benjamin Rush, one in conjunction with his wife. Along with general expenses and accounting information, the account books feature the employment records for Rush family staff and servants, often containing comments on the character and notable aspects of the employment history of each employee.

Present are Benjamin Rush's sworn statement regarding a certificate for Dickinson College, a patent for a tract of land Rush purchased in 1795, along with a certificate of attendance Rush signed for one of his students at the College of Philadelphia Medical School.

The majority of the 136 letters in the series were composed by Benjamin Rush, and letters he wrote to Julia during the 1793 yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia form a substantial part of the series. Main topics in the letters include Rush family matters, medical treatments for a wide variety of medical issues, American politics, and the country's relations with European nations. Other topics include mental illness and its treatment, the medical department in the Continental Army, the impact of epidemics upon commerce internationally, reading habits, parenting, and capital punishment.

The Organizational Records series includes materials addressing the operations of the LWV of Livonia, the LWV of Northville-Plymouth-Canton-Novi, and the LWV of Northwest Wayne County. Correspondence, primarily from the Livonia presidency of Flora McRae (later president of the LWVMI), and meeting minutes constitute a substantial part of the series. Annual reports from the Livonia branch and its successor help to situate the organization's developments on a timeline. Committee notes and event-planning discussions also yield insight into the League's major activities, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. Membership lists provide a glimpse of the composition of the group.

The Voter Newsletter series contains locally-produced copies of the Voter, a newsletter published by each branch of the LWV. The newsletter covers the period from January 1978 to May 2001 for the Livonia group, October 1985 to May 1993 (with some gaps) for the Northville-Plymouth-Canton-Novi group, and July 2001 to December 2004 for the combined Northwest Wayne County group. Taken collectively, the publications provide comprehensive yet concise insight into the activities of the various branches.

The Litigation/Court Cases (5.5 linear feet) series contains seven subseries: Sirhan Defense, Jabara vs. Manufacturer's Bank of Detroit, Jabara vs. Bank of the Commonwealth, Police Surveillance, Jabara vs. FBI, Abu Eain Defense and Miscellaneous Cases. The series consists primarily of court documents, correspondence, press clippings, testimonies, and surveillance files related to his legal cases from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s. It is arranged largely as it was received. Cases with only one folder have been placed in the miscellaneous subseries.

The Political and Cultural Activities (3.5 linear feet) series contains information about the Jabara's cultural and political activities interests. The series has been arranged alphabetically. Perhaps the most extensive portion of the series is the documentation of the 1977 National Lawyers Guild Middle East Delegation that traveled to Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and the Occupied Territories in July 1977 to observe and report on the Palestine liberation movement, the state of opposition in Israel, and the condition and treatment of Palestinians living in Israeli Occupied Territories. Jabara was influential in arranging the trip and was also a member of the delegation. Included in this collection are several folders of correspondence, clippings that express the attitude towards the visit from the popular and legal press, and copies of the minority and majority reports compiled and published by the NLG.

The Meeting Minutes and Agendas series (5.5 linear feet, 1979-2003) contains meeting minutes, agendas, and meeting materials. Meetings occur monthly, and these materials provide excellent insight into the management and administration of the UCUCA.

The Reports series (3.2 linear feet, 1979-2003) consists of reports made by the UCUCA to the University of Michigan Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and federal agencies. Also included are inspection reports of the animal care facilities made by the USDA. The Reports series is an excellent place to find detailed information about the animal care facilities located at the University of Michigan and their functions.
